What leucine is and what it actually does

Does vegan protein contain leucine?

Yes. The claim that vegan protein powder lacks leucine is false. Pea, soy, rice, faba bean, hemp and pumpkin proteins all contain leucine. The real question is whether a normal serving provides enough leucine and the other essential amino acids for the intended job.

Soy isolate is a complete protein because it supplies all nine essential amino acids in useful proportions. Pea protein also contains all nine, but is relatively lower in methionine; rice is relatively lower in lysine. Calling either one "leucine-free" or saying it contains no complete protein is misleading. A pea-and-rice blend is popular because the two limiting patterns complement one another.

Will you get enough leucine from food?

Most people who eat enough protein from a varied diet already obtain plenty of leucine. Meat, fish, dairy, eggs, soy foods, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds all contribute. The issue is more likely to be an undersized protein portion than a mysterious absence of leucine.

Do you need a leucine or BCAA supplement?
