Quick answer

Holland & Barrett is good for choice, in-person buying and occasional promotions. It is not reliably the cheapest place for protein powder, so the correct verdict is product-by-product rather than a blanket yes.

01

Our verdict

Holland & Barrett is a useful retailer, not an automatic bargain. Its strengths are a recognisable high-street presence, click and collect, a broad catalogue and the ability to compare several brands without visiting specialist sites.

Its weakness is price clarity. A large discount percentage can still leave a product more expensive per gram of protein than an unglamorous direct-brand bag. Our default own-range pick is Precision Engineered Whey because it combines a familiar creamy shake, usable core flavours and certified testing; we would shop there when its live value wins or when same-day convenience matters.

What the range gets right

The range covers whey, isolate, clear protein, plant blends, diet powders, drinks and meal-style products. That makes H&B more useful than a supermarket shelf with two tubs and a row of ready-to-drink shakes.

Precision Engineered gives H&B a credible own sports-nutrition line. The standard whey publishes a serving amount, carries Informed Sport certification and is the range's easiest product to mix into a normal water-or-milk shake. The plant blend is thicker and earthier, while clear whey is thinner, fruitier and more prone to foam before settling. Those are meaningful usability differences, not cosmetic category labels.

Third-party brands add more choice. Optimum Nutrition is our smooth-texture fallback when it sits close enough in price; specialist vegan blends are worth considering when their ingredient mix or flavour is clearly preferable. Some marketplace-sold products still require the same seller checks you would make elsewhere.

03

Where the value falls apart

Regular prices often include the cost of high-street availability and a promotional retail model. That does not make every product bad; it means the normal price should be compared with Bulk, MyProtein, Protein Works, Amazon and the manufacturer's direct price.

Small clear-whey tubs and ready-to-drink bottles are especially easy to misread. Their checkout totals look low because the pack is small. Normalising by protein delivered exposes the premium.

QuestionWhat to check
Is the discount genuine?Compare the final price with the recent price and competing retailers.
Is the pack equivalent?Match grams, servings and flavour before comparing totals.
Is it protein-dense?Use protein per 100g and cost per 1g protein.
Is convenience worth extra?Value same-day pickup separately from the powder itself.
04

H&B own brand versus famous brands

Precision Engineered whey is often the rational buy when it is promoted. Its blend is less protein-dense than the leanest isolates, but the creamy mouthfeel and straightforward core flavours make it easier to live with than many bargain powders. Optimum Nutrition has a smoother, more consistently mixed shake, but paying more does not produce proportionally more protein.

The useful comparison is not own brand versus premium in the abstract. It is whether improved flavour, texture, ingredient simplicity or testing is worth the exact premium today. If both products taste acceptable and meet the same goal, let cost per gram of protein decide.

What UK buyers actually say

Buyer comments split in a predictable way. Some value taste and being able to buy a trusted product in person; others object to regular prices and only buy during promotions. Both views can be correct because they describe different checkout prices.

06

Who should buy there

Buy from H&B if the normalised price wins, you need the product today, you want store collection or you prefer inspecting packaging before buying. Shop elsewhere when a direct retailer supplies the same product materially cheaper after delivery.

Our recommendation is deliberately conditional. Buy Precision Engineered Whey for an accessible everyday shake, clear whey when milky texture puts you off, and the plant blend when avoiding dairy matters more than recreating whey smoothness. Retail loyalty is convenient; price comparison is cheaper.

Is Holland & Barrett protein powder good quality?+

Quality varies by product. Precision Engineered publishes useful nutrition and certification information, while third-party brands retain their own specifications. Judge the exact label rather than the retailer name.

Is Holland & Barrett cheaper than buying online?+

Sometimes during promotions, but not consistently. Compare pack size, delivery and cost per gram of protein.

Is Precision Engineered a Holland & Barrett brand?+

Yes. Precision Engineered is H&B's sports-nutrition range and includes whey, plant protein, clear protein, creatine and other products.
