We compared the protein bars in the ProteinDeals catalogue on protein per bar, price per 20g of protein and the sweetener system on the label, then added the scores from our own taste tests, where he and she each rate every bar out of 5. A cheap bar with 10g of protein is not cheap protein, so price per 20g is the fairest price comparison.

Six bars worth buying in 2026

Myprotein Layered Bar: best value. About 20g of protein in a 60g bar, from around 83p a bar in a 12-pack on offer, the lowest price per 20g of protein among the mainstream bars we compared. Prices vary by flavour: the Triple Chocolate Fudge we tested was £19.49 for 12 and scored 2.63/5 in our taste test, so pick your flavour carefully. Compare Layered Bar prices.

Grenade Carb Killa: best flavour range. Around 20g to 22g of protein per 60g bar across a wide range of flavours. The cheapest listings we found were at Nutricircle, which sells clearance and short-dated stock, so check the best-before date. Compare Grenade prices.

MaxiNutrition Classic High Protein Bar: most protein for its size. 20g of protein in a 40g bar, half its weight in protein. It costs more per bar than the Layered Bar but suits anyone who wants a smaller, denser bar. Compare MaxiNutrition prices.

Precision Engineered Plant Protein Bar: best vegan. About 22g of plant protein in a 65g bar at Holland & Barrett, the highest of the vegan bars we compared. The Protein Works' Ridiculous Vegan Protein Bar is a cheaper single-bar alternative with about 17g. Compare Plant Protein Bar prices.

Myprotein x Hotel Chocolat Layered Bar: fewest sweeteners. About 18g of protein, with no polyols or intense sweeteners on its ingredient list, which makes it the pick if other bars taste artificial to you. It costs roughly twice as much per bar as the standard Layered Bar. Compare prices.

Myprotein Impact Protein Bar: best-rated in our taste test. About 20g of protein in a 64g bar, at around £1.62 a bar in a 12-pack. The Cookies & Cream flavour scored 4.38/5 from our testers, the highest of any bar we have tried. Read the review or compare Impact Protein Bar prices.

Tried and rated: our his and her taste test

Price and protein only tell half the story, so we eat the bars too. In each first-hand review, he and she score the bar out of 5 on taste, texture, nutrition, value and satisfaction. Three bars have been through the test so far, all from Myprotein, ranked below by our score, the average of his and hers.

Our testers and Myprotein's customers disagree most on the wafer and the Layered Bar, which customers rate 4.8/5 and 4.6/5. Taste is personal, so treat both scores as a guide, and if a bar tastes artificial to you, this explainer covers why.

The white-chocolate flavour is the main draw. It recalls the older Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme flavour without becoming as sickly as the modern version, and the protein powder does not dominate the taste.

The contrast in textures stands out most: a firm bar with a softer centre and small crispy pieces across the coating. It is her favourite protein bar tried so far.

The sweet cream-and-wafer flavour is pleasant enough, but it does not deliver the peanut-butter taste promised on the wrapper. The wafer also feels drier and less cleanly crisp than stronger examples.

The structure and dry, crispy style suit her preferences, and the generic flavour is enjoyable by itself. The score falls because she would not have identified it as peanut butter without reading the wrapper.

The chocolate coating and chewy centre are pleasant, and the bar does taste recognisably chocolatey. The problem is the lingering protein-powder aftertaste, which makes it difficult to want another one despite liking the texture.

Is a protein bar worth it?

Gram for gram, protein bars are an expensive way to buy protein. Our catalogue's mainstream whey powders cost about £0.99 to £1.21 per 25g of protein, while even the best-value bar costs about 84p for 20g, and most cost well over £1.50. Bars earn their place on convenience, not price.

If you eat one most days, buying the box rather than single bars usually saves the most. The bars comparison shows multipack prices across retailers.
