Quick answer
Good value, if you are happy with a blend rather than pure whey. In October 2026, Sports Fuel's Anabolic Whey Matrix and Premium Protein cost about 25p per 25g of protein in 5kg bags on sale at Bodybuilding Warehouse, far below mainstream wheys at about £1. Both mix whey with casein, soy and wheat-derived glutamine peptides, so check the allergens, and treat the 'dry basis' protein figures on two other Sports Fuel powders with care.

Sports Fuel is Bodybuilding Warehouse's own budget range, sold mainly in 5kg bags. In October 2026, Anabolic Whey Matrix and Premium Protein were both £39.99 for 5kg, down from £59.99, which works out at about 25p per 25g of protein. The 1kg bags were £14.99, or about 47p.
That is a fraction of what mainstream wheys cost: the 1kg bags from Bulk, The Protein Works and Myprotein in our catalogue came to about £0.99 to £1.21 per 25g of protein. Sports Fuel's other powders, Whey Matrix and Diet Whey, cost more, at roughly 45p to 55p per 25g in 5kg bags.

Diet Whey was not on sale. Whey Matrix and Diet Whey state protein on a dry basis, so the as-sold figure is slightly lower than shown.
What is actually in it
None of these is a pure whey. Anabolic Whey Matrix and Premium Protein both use a blend of whey concentrate, micellar casein and soy protein isolate, plus glutamine peptides derived from wheat, sweetened with sucralose. Blends like this are common among budget powders.
For most people a blend works fine as a daily protein shake, even though casein digests more slowly than whey. It does mean four allergens to check, milk, soy, wheat and gluten, so Sports Fuel is a poor fit if you avoid any of them.
Two things the label does not make obvious
Two details on the Sports Fuel labels are easy to miss, and both affect how much protein you are really paying for.
- 1
"Dry basis" protein. Whey Matrix and Diet Whey state their protein per 100g on a dry basis, meaning measured without the powder's moisture. The powder as you buy it contains some moisture, so its real protein per scoop is a little lower than the headline figure.
- 2
Added extras. Whey Matrix and Diet Whey add creatine, taurine, amino acids and, in Diet Whey, CLA, acai and green tea extracts. They take up space in the tub that would otherwise be protein, which is why those two cost more per 25g of protein than Anabolic Whey Matrix and Premium Protein.
Is Sports Fuel protein good?
As a cheap daily protein, yes: Anabolic Whey Matrix and Premium Protein give about 24g of protein per 30g scoop for a fraction of the price of branded whey. As a whey isolate or a clean-label shake, no: they are blends, with soy and wheat, and a 5kg bag is a big commitment if you have not tried the flavour.
If you want pure whey at a low price, compare Bulk Pure Whey and Warrior Whey on sale. Otherwise, the Sports Fuel range is worth a look, as long as you buy the 5kg bag at a sale price.

No. It is a blend of whey concentrate, micellar casein and soy protein isolate, with glutamine peptides from wheat.
How much protein is in Sports Fuel Premium Protein?+
About 81g per 100g on the label, or around 24g in a 30g serving.
What does 'protein (dry basis)' mean?+
The protein figure was measured without the powder's moisture. The powder you buy contains some moisture, so its actual protein per scoop is slightly lower.
